DAY 55

Saturday, 8/23/69

All up late. Fast breakfast and we left (regretfully) Kalaloch for points South. Drove through many ugly miles of work created by the lumber industry.
Really sickened us. Tree stumps all over or whole fields burned with smoke clogging the air and our nostrils for miles. Finally, when out of “lumber area” continued on Highway 101 past beautiful harbors, rivers, small bridges and lovely fishing towns. When we neared the Oregon border saw fishermen and campers galore. Chinook salmon country and everyone and his mother seemed to be out. Crossed a 4-mile toll bridge into Astoria, Oregon, and really a sight!
Called Mom and Dad from a visitor center and happy to hear all is well. Continued down 101 – beautiful coastline until we came to Cannon Beach where we stopped to BBQ (on the beach) filet of salmon. All ate it up and enjoyed, then made “smores.” We learned this from Kalaloch neighbors and was yummy! Got boys in PJ’s and drove down to a County beach at Garibaldi called Barview where we camped the night.
