After unplugging our holding tank (stopped up by toilet paper!), getting water, we headed away from Tahoe on big divided highway over Donner Pass (7,300 ft.) and into Auburn. Dropped to 2,000 or lower and really hot. Drove through Sacramento, San Joaquin Valley, and all so damned hot we were miserable (98 degrees). Finally, came to Saratoga and turned off for Big Basin. A damn car turned sharp curve too close to us and trailer scraped into dirt embankment, scratching right side of trailer. We all sick about it. Road very windy and when finally “home” in Big Basin (4:00 p.m.) got a large beautiful site next to Opal Creek. Full of redwood, oak, scrub, birds.
Walked around the park headquarters. Got deer food for boys to feed
while Howard and I relaxed in coffee shop with dessert. Had taco dinner, late. Went for night walk to call folks. Came back for dessert and a raccoon came almost up to us; sat up looking for food. Really scared me for some crazy reason. We all showered (provided here), washed hair. Boys to sleep and Howard and I read by Coleman lantern outside till late. All people gone as Labor Day over, and we feel as if we run this whole place!
9/1/69 Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Relaxed second day here in Big Basin (one of our favorite campsites).. We drove (without trailer) to Felton and took a ride on the Narrow Gauge "Skunk" Railroad...
Then back to campsite for dinner and our last night on this Big Trip adventure
