Howard and I spent the a.m. canning our blackberries. Canned 18 pints and gave away another gallon of them. It was fun and not too hard. We all showered and washed hair and on our way by 2:30 p.m. Drove down Oregon coast.
Came to Seal Rock –jutting out quite far into surf and huge!
Howard and boys surf fished for a while. Able to walk through tide pools or lounge around on the clean empty beach. By 5:00 p.m. we left; picked up a hitchhiker, a Berkeley student who hiked through Canada and now on way to San Francisco. Only went with us for 40 miles until we came to Highway 126 and turned off for the inland route. Each town so charming; mainly fishing and lumbering. Generally our road went along the Umpqua River and still as beautiful as we remember it a few years ago. Stopped at roadside rest to make dinner – chicken (took over one hour to cook), which we ate for dessert! Put kids in PJ’s and came to Eugene, Oregon and still M. and B. still up. Got them ice cream and Howard called his folks. Sorry to hear Sam Stone had died yesterday; was a very nice man. Folks happy to hear from the boys. Boys fell asleep and we came to Whistler’s Bend
Campground (County) 13 miles from Roseburg. Had to awaken the caretaker to open up (locked across the road after 10:00 p.m.). Found level spot. Moon full and so bright. Howard and I able to walk to river. Much drier here.
